PACT Prom Project Kicks off this week!!!

The Make Den kicked off the first PACT Prom Project Class with a fashion illustration workshop! PACT is a restorative justice organization which helps at-risk youth in the GTA with almost no government funding. PACT Prom Project is aimed at giving students practical design, sewing and alteration skills, while working towards the ultimate goal of completing a finished prom dress, which will then be presented to three pre-selected high school students from across Toronto who lack the resources to buy a prom dress on their own - a real dream come true!
Our fashion illustration workshop was lead by fashion illustrator Danielle Meder, and the results were spectacular!!! Danielle really knows her stuff - she's worked for The Fashion Incubator, NOW magazine, The National Post, The Globe and Mail, and Worn Journal! Dan's gift is making even complicated stuff seem simple, like these fashion croquis. She breaks things down into easy parts - she always starts an illustration with the head and spine, then she adds hips and shoulders, a torso and finally hands, arms and legs. After the skeleton is in place, she puts a layer of tracing paper over the whole thing and traces the pretty parts, while leaving out the construction lines! But really - isn't fashion just like that, though?
She held the classes attention for more than 3 whole hours, which isn't easy to do - and as you can see, she really gets results!!!

Promise To Repeat!

Photobucket

So we're almost finished moving into our new building at 1207... the floors are cherrywood, the walls are a sunny yellow and we couldn't be more excited about our beautiful new picturebox windows!!! The sun shines in at the back from the south in the morning and it floods the whole store. I can't wait for it to be summer so that we can start planting things in the backyard.

But the very best part about the new store is that there are four little boutiques upstairs and a design collective in the basement. They are run by 8 fantastic, talented and driven entrepreneurs and they are quickly becoming our new favorite people! I'm going to post a few entries on here about the lovely people that we're lucky to be calling our neighbours... starting with Tanya Chevannes and her Vintage Collection 'Promise to Repeat'. Tanya ALWAYS has a smile on her face, and her outfits are killer every time I see her. The girl has style. Promise To Repeat originated when Tanya started to recall her earliest, fondest memories of being infatuated with the clothes and red pumps in her mother’s closet as a young girl. For little girl’s everywhere, a promise to never forget about the feeling of playing dress up became Promise To Repeat in 2009.

Tanya specializes in vintage pieces that have a story to tell... Specializing in the 80s era from super cute feminine dresses to bold cool retro skirts, casual to glam handbags, sweaters, boots, jewelry and lots of leather! Tanya loves the enjoyment of hand picking one of a kind vintage beauties. She'll have you feeling confident, sexy and comfortable in your own vintage skin, come check her out!

How to Open a New Store in 3 steps!

Step One: Sign the Lease! Good, now you have a space for your new store..... in our case, it was 1207 Bloor St. W.
Step 2: Clean Everything! Once you have your new space - give it some love! Clean the kitchen, dust the windows, scrub the floors and then relax... You're almost at step 3!
Step 3: Time to Renovate! That's right... all it takes to remove a wall is a hammer and some determination. Oh, and a big garbage bag for all the leftover pieces of drywall.... Now fill your store up with the most amazing clothes and boots that you can find, give it a name and you're in business!!! We're calling ours 69 Vintage Collective and we're open for business this week - come visit! There's 3 levels of vintage furniture, clothing, shoes, rugs, textiles and waaaay more.... just in time for Christmas!

Cut, Paste, Etc...

Kids, this is going to be AWESOME! A giant arts and crafts party hosted by 1234 Bloor. The $6 cover will include access to our well-stocked table of arts and crafts supplies, and the evening is going to feature some awesome music (to be determined...). Drinks and holiday treats will also be available.

This is arts and crafts kindergarten style, with no fear and lots of mess and fun. Bring your friends!!!

Featuring music by After Runnymede!!!

Notice Our New Banner....?!

So you might have noticed we have a new banner!!! We're not changing too much, just the banner and the size of the photos, which we're trying to make bigger. I've been having trouble finding pictures that are of a high enough resolution since I often upload pictures from facebook, but I guess I'll try and use pics from my Canon Rebel XL from now on so they're big enough to fill up all the new space I've got here!!!

Real Life Style Hero: Nadja Sayej

Every so often, somebody comes along who isn't afraid to break the rules and bust out of the ordinary - and their shirts! Nadja Sayej, a pioneer of the new wave of art journalism in Canada and co-creator of the super-successful youtube series "Art Stars TV" is one of those rare people. Nadja is shown here wearing a one-piece Buy the Pound find (cost: $7.50), styled by Philipe Vintena, and her own bra. Check her out here!

As Good As Gold

'Tis the season to dress vintage - let the young Goldie Hawn and her classical, yet flirty rendition of the LBD inspire you when dressing for the holidays!
